Celebrating 19 years in 2O24, this annual exhibition forges an exciting and diverse collection of paintings, photography, ceramics, jewellery, weavings and sculpture by represented and invited First Nations women artists, both emerging and eminent. The exhibition recognises and celebrates their expanding contribution to Australian and international visual arts and culture.

Showcasing the rich tapestry of artistic expression, The Women’s Show highlights the unique perspectives, stories, and talents of First Nations Australian and Torres Strait Islander women. The artworks reflect the diverse traditions, contemporary influences, and profound cultural significance embedded in each piece.
This year we are delighted to introduce emerging artist Clare Jaque Vasquez (Gomeroi/Kamilaroi), whose paintings capture stories and weaving practices in raised textural form on her canvases, utilising layering to embed and protect stories. Vasquez was the Regional Winner (AUS & NZ) at the 2O22 Art for Change Prize in London at Saatchi Gallery, recently won the First Nations Artist Award at the 2O23 Queensland Regional Art Awards as well as the Indigenous Artist Award at the 2O23 Hinchinbrook Art Awards.

The ‘Minyma Kutjara’ story tells of two women travelling alone who are looking for fresh ‘kapi’ (water). Along their travels they have to escape the advances of a ‘wati’ (man) who stalks them. Angela’s paintings frequently show the path and camps from their journey across the lands, as well as the night-time constellations of the Milky Way that lays above. She works with bold, graphic colour palettes and is notable in her use of both contemporary techniques and composition to tell the traditional story.

These waterholes are of Ngamurru. Ngamurru is my home. It is not like a spring - the waterhole dries out after a while. At these waterholes many women were staying here for a short while in the creation time (Dreamtime). These women were Nangala, my mothers. Another group of women, a group of Nungurrayi and Nangala were travelling to Marrpirnti/Kiwirrkura while the Nangala women were at Ngamurru. At Ngamurru the Nangala women collected, cooked and ate the bush tucker wanpurru that goes on sandhills. They then set off to the east to Papun and Ngartan.

Michelle Anderson grew up watching from a safe distance as the acclaimed painting careers of her grandmothers Myrtle Pennington and Carlene West grew to great heights. She would sit, watch, and listen as her grandmothers painted the significant sites of Mulplya and Kanpala. Myrtle loved having her granddaughter by her side and watching the subtle generational transference of Tjukurpa. Michelle now lays claim to her own creative interpretations of her granmother’s Country in striking and moving compositions.
